Shmoop is a site similar to Spark Notes or Cliffs Notes. It is written by Phd students at top universities, and contains many great resources for teachers. It offers teachers assignments and activities for a large number of subjects, including History, Economics and English. The premium version offers more resources, but the free has plenty of teaching tools to help a young teacher develop lessons and assignments.
OneWord is a free website that produces one word writing prompts, and then allows the writer 60 seconds to write about that word. The objective of the prompt isn’t to have the student define the word, but to instead have them just write whatever comes to mind about that word in a short amount of time, and put it to paper. The site then prompts the user to “turn it in” which can have the writing either sent to an email address or a class website.
